  3.     Life without electricity and water is something Sarajevo's 
  4.     people were not prepared for. We feel like animals. The ones 
  5.     who live on the top floors are the most miserable. More 
  6.     exposed than anyone to the bombardments and sniper fire, we 
  7.     trudge ten floors in the dark, burdened with liters of water and 
  8.     kilos of wood, almost every day.

  10. 13.    How much waste do you generate; and how does your 
  11.     family dispose of its waste?
  12.     Trash is left on the streets and burned there, since it's 
  13.     dangerous for the garbagemen to collect it regularly. People 
  14.     and dogs search the trash.

  16. 14.    Does your family buy, produce, or sell foreign goods?
  17.     The former Yugoslavia was famous for being the only truly 
  18.     successful communist country in terms of quality of life. The 
  19.     state shops sold many foreign goods for a decent price: Italian 
  20.     shoes, German cars (Volkswagen had factories in Slovenia, 
  21.     Croatia and Bosnia). The average person had a TV, stereo 
  22.     equipment and a car. They liked European fashion. People 
  23.     were able to travel abroad.

  27. 15.    What is each family member's most valued possession? 
  28.     Why?
  29.     Nafja: granddaughter, Nadja. At first, I didn't consider my 
  30.     possessions especially valuable. After I thought longer about 
  31.     it, I thought about my little lamp. This lamp might be my most 
  32.     valuable thing.  Because it's always on, when it lights up it's the 
  33.     sign that electricity is working in the house for a while.  So I 
  34.     will read or watch TV, my two favorite activities. So, electricity 
  35.     is really my most valuable thing. 
  36.     Lokman: granddaughter, Nadja. Also valuable are my 
  37.     medical book, the little radio, and my tomato plants. The 
  38.     Christiaan Barnard Illustrated Medical Book was edited in the 
  39.     early 70's, in Serbo-Croatian translation. It gives a general 
  40.     view of human body functions, illustrated with photographs
